Susan Quinn teaches music and directs the award-winning choral and string ensembles at Holy Heart of Mary High School in St. John's, Newfoundland. She is also founder and conductor of the Quintessential Vocal Ensemble, one of the province's most accomplished amateur choirs. Susan was once herself a student at Holy Heart, where her early musical experiences included singing in the choir when it won the prestigious BBC "Let the Peoples Sing" competition, and playing in the school orchestra. She completed degrees in Music and Music Education at Memorial University of Newfoundland, with a major in violin, and a Master's degree in choral conducting at the University of Maine. She has studied conducting under artists such as Wayne Riddell, Robert Cooper, James Croft, John Haberlen and Dennis Cox.
Susan is in demand across Canada as an adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor, and is active locally as a Suzuki violin instructor and vocal coach in musical theatre, including productions of West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Camelot, Oliver!, The King and I, Into the Woods, Jesus Christ Superstar and A Chorus Line. Among her choirs' accomplishments are first prize at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales, the gold medal at the International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna, several national choral awards, a YTV Achievement Award, and five compact discs. In 2001, she was named a recipient of the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence.
